Below you'll find direct links to the "add URL" pages of the top search engines and directories used by over 90% of all Web surfers.
To submit your web site to most of the search services listed here you only need to input your URL and e-mail address in their forms. They will automatically create a description and category based on your site's text and other factors.
A few directories ask you to provide a 15 - 30 word description, and up to 5 keywords, so have these prepared to cut and paste into their forms. Some ask for a fee.

These search engines use robots to spider through the Web, finding and indexing millions of Web pages. Submitting your Web site's home page to them, along with URL's of key pages, will speed up the process of indexing your site. It can take anywhere from a few days to a few months after submission for them to include your site. After that, they come back periodically to check on changes. If they haven't listed you within 6-8 weeks, try resubmiting.

MAKE YOUR SITE "SEARCH ENGINE FRIENDLY"
The following are technically not search engines, but selective directories where human editors decide what will be included. They do not include all submissions.
Be prepared with a very precise, keyword-laden description in several lengths (15 - 25 words) which they require you provide. Don't include your site name in the description to save words, it will be displayed as your site title. Submitting to these takes the longest because of the descriptions and categories. If you're not sure what category to submit to, search for a similar site and see where it's listed.
YAHOO
Yahoo is still by far the most used Web search tool. They now charge commercial sites $299 to be considered. Nonprofit sites may submit for free.

OPEN DIRECTORY
Go to the category you find most appropriate and at the TOP of the page you'll find a link to a form to submit your Web site. used by various other search engines to provide a human-created directory.
LOOKSMART
Go to the page linked from above for detailed info. They now charge $149 minimum to submit and $299 for "express service."
