MEDIA MANAGEMENT
Over 20 years in top management positions in media and other organizations:
- Served for 10 years in executive positions at The Video Project (distributor of several hundred top-rated educational and social issue videos and CD-ROM's, including Oscar and Emmy winners}: 7 years as Executive Director, and prior to that Director of Marketing and Development, and Director of TV Projects.
- Served as management consultant with National Educational Media Network, developing the `97 national conference, new Web Site, and the Apple Awards Competition.
- Prior work includes publicity, fundraising and management positions in political campaigns and national non-profits.
FUNDRAISING
Over 20 years experience in all aspects of foundation, donor and event fundraising:
- Raised over $2 million for a wide range of media projects and campaigns.
- Researched and wrote numerous proposals for support of media projects, including to the NEH, NEA, MacArthur Foundation, Soros Fund and local humanities councils. One co-authored proposal was used as a "model proposal" by state humanities council.
- Reviewed and edited many funding proposals written by media producers.
- Organized celebrity and other donor events.
- Wrote numerous direct mail and membership solicitations.
- Served on small foundation board.
DISTRIBUTION
Over 14 years experience in all aspects of media program development, acquisition, distribution and contract negotiation:MEDIA MARKETING
- Evaluated and acquired over 250 programs, including videos and CD-ROMs, produced by 200 independent producers, non-profit organizations, TV stations, and production companies.
- Negotiated all aspects of contracts and managed ongoing producer relations.
- Served as consultant in all phases of media production, from proposal development to final cut for dozens of productions, including Oscar winners.
- Executive producer and script writer of several award-winning programs.
- Evaluated distributors and proposed distribution options as consultant.
Over 13 years experience conceiving, directing and implementing all phases of media marketing:
- Marketed a broad range of educational, home and television markets for over 250 titles. Titles included five Academy Award winners or nominees, numerous PBS productions, multimedia titles, and a science series sponsored by Discover Magazine.
- Developed and coordinated overall marketing strategy, market research, copywriting, list acquisition, tracking response, print ad design and placement, published reviews, festival entries, subdistribution deals, and exhibits at conventions. Conceived and developed dozens of direct mail promotions, including catalogs, brochures and study guides, and video covers. Extensively marketed media programs on the Internet and World Wide Web.
- Developed retail marketing strategies for a variety of programs. Successfully placed programs in a wide range of retail catalogs, including Readers Digest Video Catalog, Music for Little People, and Facets Media, and with major retail outlets and distributors, including the Nature Company, Blockbuster, Baker and Taylor, Monterey Bay Aquarium and Fast Forward.
- Directed and implemented national and grassroots publicity efforts for media programs resulting in articles in major national publications, including the New York Times, USA Today, Good Housekeeping, Billboard, L.A. Times Syndicate, and many others.
BROADCAST
Over 13 years experience planning and implementing broadcast plans and publicity:
- Negotiated PBS and cable TV deals, as well as international broadcast rights.
- Evaluated PBS options, how to best present to PBS stations, and how to improve station carriage.
- Developed national media and grassroots publicity, on-air offers and fulfillment for national PBS broadcasts.
- Organized nationally coordinated local cablecasts for several series.
INTERNET Conceived and developed Web sites and Internet promotion since 1995 for major media organizations, producers, nonprofits, and small businesses.
SITE DEVELOPMENT AND UPGRADE
- Developed comprehensive site plans, including information and navigation design.
- Directed implementation of complete site development, as well as upgrades.
- Created and edited site content and pages.
- Created site navigation and other graphics.
- Directed graphic artists to develop desired page design, navigation and other artwork.
- Evaluated existing sites and promotion and proposed revisions and upgrades to increase effectiveness, value and publicity.
- Added and configured internal search engines.
ECOMMERCE AND ONLINE FUNDRAISING
- Added and configured a variety of online secure shopping carts.
- Added and configured secure donation and membership forms.
SITE PROMOTION
- Developed and implemented detailed promotional plans including print and online.
- Researched appropriate listservs, online journals and related sites
- Created links, wrote press releases and other promotion.
- Added "opt-in" email lists and newsletters.
- Optimized pages and sites for highest possible rankings on search engines and directories, including developing and testing tags, creating frames workarounds, and other needed elements.
